Which Hyaluronic Acid Should I be Using?

HA has become such a staple in almost everyone’s skincare routine and rightfully so. One of the most important factors for skin to be healthy is hydration. When skin is dry, its function to protect the body against external environmental aggressors such as bacteria, chemicals and dirt is diminished. In order for the skin to protect our body, it must be kept adequately hydrated so that it can remain an intact and flexible protective barrier.

This is where hyaluronic acid comes in. It is a naturally occurring sugar molecule and acts as a powerful humectant - it can hold 1000 times its weight in water!! Maintaining appropriate amounts of moisture, space filler, structure stabilization, supporting elastin and collagen, cell protection are some of the other important roles that HA plays in the dermis.

As we get older our body produces less HA, just like collagen and elastin. Therefore, there are an abundance of products that do a splendid job at drawing moisture to the skin but also stimulate naturally occurring HA production in the skin.

Did you know though, that the function of HA in skincare products is actually dependent on the molecular weight (MW)? In fact, HA is categorised as high, medium and low MW and each size offers something different. A different cellular response, a different pathway of skin repair and healing, and a different level of penetration. Thus, it’s worthwhile understanding what each size does. Low and medium weight HA penetrates deeper into the dermis, providing maximum hydration from the inside out. It helps rehydrate skin from a cellular level. On the other hand, high weight HA can’t penetrate the surface layer of the skin. Instead it creates a film on the skin to prevent transepidermal water loss (TEWL) and also deliver immediate intensive hydration for instant smoothing and firming effects.

Our recommendation is to use products that contain multi-weight HA.

This will lead to better results than just using one or the other. Having both will provide benefits from both the surface and cellular level of the skin. Por qué no los dos? With constant application, you’ll notice an improvement in the barrier function of the skin, increased skin elasticity, reduced skin roughness and wrinkles.
