What happens when the skin is dehydrated?

If you’re in your 20s, possibly early 30s, and you see fine lines and wrinkles, there’s a high chance that your skin is actually dehydrated and dry. Did you know, that first signs of premature aging can actually be caused by lack of moisture?

One the most important factors for skin to be healthy is hydration. We dare say that it is critical to maintain a healthy skin. Why? – the skin acts as the first line of defence for our body and protects us from external environmental aggressors such as bacteria, microorganisms, chemicals, pollution etc. It also helps regulate and prevent loss of fluids and electrolytes from escaping our human body.

The skin’s elasticity, flexibility and softness depends on the level of moisture present in the stratum corneum. There are many things that can influence skin hydration and in one way or another we all are all exposed to these conditions:

  • Low Humidity
  • Wind
  • Air Conditioner
  • Cold Temeprature
  • Surctatns like soap
  • UV
  • Cleansing routine
  • Chronological aging

Lack of hydration can cause a multitude of issues:

  • Skin becomes less resilient to environmental irritants and allow contaminants to easily penetrate the body.
  • Skin is prone to peeling or cracking, leading to further skin dehydration through Transepidermal water loss (TEWL).
  • Dehydrated skin looks dull, rough, less supple and even flaky. It can worsen the appearance of wrinkles and premature aging.

In most cases, dry skin does not present itself as a serious problem or medical condition. However, it can induce skin discomfort, itchiness, roughness and skin tightness. Lucky for us, we are spoilt for choice when it comes topical products specifically targeted for treating dry skin. Cosmetic ingredients for hydration/moisturisation fall into one of the following categories:

An occlusive ingredient act as a protective seal over the skin. It traps water in the epidermis to prevent TEWL. These completely come in the form of face oils which contain a high concentration of fatty and waxy substances.

RevitAge Replenishing Squalane & Argan Oil Serum from HD Beauty’s is 100% organic, pure and chock-full of active botanicals that shakes dry, dehydrated skin back to life. The addition of Squalene further enhances the supple and soft complexion and balances natural oil production.

Prickly Pear Seed Oil contains the highest content of Vitamin E. This oil soluble antioxidant is also known to help with skin healing, provide intense moisture and aid in skin regeneration. Prickly pear seed oil absorbs almost instantly into the skin. This means that it leaves little or almost no residue so it’s suitable to be used morning and night. It would be a perfect ultra-light oil for oily/acne prone skin types that still experience dehydration.

Humectants, similar to sponges, absorb/pull water into stratum corneum and retain it to keep it hydrated and moist. Common humectants include glycerin, aloe vera gel, hyaluronic acid, propylene glycol and many more. A tip when using humectants – apply on damp skin. although not common, since most humectant products have water in the formula, humectants can potentially make skin even drier by pulling water from the stratum corneum.

Hanskin Hyaluron Skin Essence is a super hydrating treatment for dry skin. The essence contains low molecular weight sodium hyaluronate that can hold 1000 times more moisture than water and can sink faster and deeper into the skin. With a slightly thicker than water consistency, this product will make the skin look and feel plump, supple, glowy, softer and super-duper moisturised.

HD Beauty’s Hyaluronic Acid Serum is a blend of meticulous ingredients such Hyaluronic Acid, Aloe and botanical extracts. Emollients don’t necessarily add moisture to the skin. Instead, it provides structural integrity to the skin. Imagine that your skin looks like bricks and mortar.  The bricks are your cells and the mortar is your lipids. When there is lack of lipids between cells, the skin becomes dry and flaky. Emollients, like plant oils, butters, fatty acids, act as the mortar to fill missing gaps between the bricks for smoother and softer skin.
