Madecassoside: A Promising Ingredient For Sensitive Skin

If madecassoside sounds foreign to you, don’t worry, you’re not the only one! Not as popular as Vitamin C, bakuchiol, hyaluronic acid and such, but it’s certainly a favourite for soothing and redness reduction. So, what exactly is madecassoside?

Madecassoside is one of the four bioactive compounds found in a medicinal plant called Centella Asiatica, also known as Tiger Grass. The other bioactive compounds include madecassic acid, asiaticoside and asiatic acid. Although it’s still somewhat unknown or considered new to the skincare world, Madecassoside has been around for a while and is the hero ingredient in Dr. Jart’s Cicapair range. It’s highly praised for its outstanding soothing and wound healing effects. Rich in amino acids, beta carotene, fatty acids and phytochemicals is why Madecassoside has the power to potentially do great things for the skin.

It’s worth mentioning that the studies for Madecassoside are no way near as extensive as other skincare actives. However, based on the phytonutrients it contains, there’s an array of potential skin benefits which madecassosides delivers.

  • Antioxidant protection – Madecassoside can provide protection against skin damaging free radicals formed from environmental factors such as UV rays and pollution
  • Anti-inflammatory, soothing properties – While not significant, there have been some early studies to suggest that madecassoside can dampen the inflammatory cascade especially during acne flares
  • Anti-aging properties - Some studies have shown that Madecassoside is able to promote collagen synthesis which in turn reduces wrinkles and fine lines, improves skin firmness and texture. There was a small clinical study conducted that showed vitamin C and Madecassoside working synergistically to improve the appearance of the skin.
  • Inhibits UV Induced melanin synthesis – One study shows Madecassoside can significantly inhibit UV induced melanin synthesis. This in vivo study was conducted on artificially tanned human skin and the melanin index decreased in the course of the 8 weeks after topical application.
